Tolai Dancers
Journey deep into the tropical jungle to see the mystic rites of Tolai dancers, also known as the Gunantuna, Fire Dancers or the magical Tolai Duk-Duks dressed in their all-encompassing suits of leaves. The Gazelle Peninsula is the home of the Tolai people, original inhabitants of the area.
The Tolai people continue to practice their traditional ceremonial dances. The most spectacular is the Tolai dukduk ceremony in which villagers wear their tubuan (female) and dukduk (male) masks. The children of the performers are initiated and instructed into the rituals of the unique Tolai dances. Dukduks sometimes can be seen travelling from village to village to attend the ritualistic ceremonies, hundreds of years old.
