Japanese Tunnels
During the Pacific Campaign, the Japanese constructed a complex series of tunnels in and around Rabaul. They were dug into the pumice hills to house bunkers, barracks, hospitals and the Command Head Quarters. Constructed by Japanese Army and Navy personnel. At the end of World War II in 1945, it is estimated the labyrinth of the tunnels was so vast that they covered over 160 kms.
Accommodated were a fully equipped military hospital extending over 4 kms and dozens of barges and other landing craft.
After the war, the tunnels were abandoned along with their contents including vehicles and other military equipment, left to rust into tropical oblivion. To explore every tunnel would take weeks. However, a 30 minute drive from Rapopo Plantation Resort will enable you to view a sampling.
