General Yamamoto's Bunker

General Yamamoto was a Harvard graduate and the Naval Marshal General and commander in chief of the Japanese Imperial Navy in World War II. His underground command post was located in Rabaul (opposite the once grand and exclusive New Guinea Club) in which you can view the fading campaign maps etched on the walls of the bunker where he lived.

Here he plotted the South Pacific campaign including the invasion of the New Guinea mainland and Australia.  His far-flung plans for conquest were summarily terminated at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

A visit to General Yamomoto’s bunker and Rabaul generally is a day long adventure.
