Tamur funeral
More than one thousand mourners were present at the village funeral of East New Britain, Tolai politician The Honourable Patrick Tamur. Mr Tamur the son of the late Oscar Tamur died suddenly whilst attending to his electoral duties in Port Moresby, PNG’s capital.
The large circular containers shown in the pictures are rolls of traditional shell money which according to Tolai custom are a measure of Mr Tamur’s natural wealth accumulated during his life time. Mourners also present shell money as tokens of respect.
In accordance with traditional practice the rolls are broken open by family and the shells distributed amongst those present. Female mourners likewise offer food and beetle nut.
Rapopo’s joint General Managers Brian and Beverley Martin were invited to attend by Tolai leader, Mr Meli Paivu . The invitation was a singular honour as they were the only non-indigenous persons in attendance.
